About the Hibernian Newman Club

Founded in 1964, the Hibernian Newman Club of San Francisco was established by Bay Area Irish Americans who shared a commitment to faith, heritage, friendship, and service.

From the beginning, the Club has been guided by three enduring purposes:

  • to support the Newman Centers and campus ministry within the Archdiocese of San Francisco;

  • to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Irish Americans to the Bay Area community;

  • and to promote friendship, community, and charity among its members.

For more than six decades, generations of members have carried that mission forward.

The Club brings together business and professional people connected by Irish heritage—or simply a desire to be part of the Irish community—and welcomes new members who share its values and purpose. Through fellowship, fundraising, and community involvement, members help sustain the traditions on which the Club was founded while continuing its support of campus ministry, including the Newman Centers at San Francisco State University and the University of California, San Francisco.

Perhaps no tradition captures the spirit of the Hibernian Newman Club better than its annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon. What began alongside the Club's founding has grown into one of San Francisco's longstanding St. Patrick's Day traditions, bringing together hundreds of Bay Area Irish Americans and friends alongside civic, community, and church leaders—all while supporting the Club's charitable mission.

More than sixty years after its founding, the Hibernian Newman Club remains rooted in the same ideals that brought its first members together: supporting campus ministry, honoring the contributions of Irish Americans, strengthening friendships, and giving back to the community.

Irish in heritage. San Francisco in spirit. Built on faith, friendship, community, and charity.
